Dias scores deciding goal as PDL side advances to face USL’s Charleston Battery

THE VILLAGES, Fla. – The Villages SC’s Pedro Dias scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to lead his side to a 1-0 victory against the NPSL’s Kraze United on Wednesday in the First Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at The Villages Polo Field.

During the winning sequence, The Villages gained possession in midfield and provided a nice through ball to Dias rushing in from the right side. Dias shot low into the left side of the frame for the winning shot.

The 2016 PDL expansion team heads to the Second Round of the tournament to face the USL’s Charleston Battery. That match takes place on Wednesday, May 18, at MUSC Health Stadium in Charleston, S.C. (7:30 p.m. ET).

Mississippi Brilla FC 2, CD Motagua of New Orleans 0: Brilla’s Eduardo Cruz and Ignacio Flores scored first-half goals to lead the way for a First Round victory at Traceway Park in Clinton, Miss. Mississippi will host the USL’s OKC Energy FC next week.

Jersey Express 2, Clarkstown SC Eagles 1: Jersey Express’s Juan Correa talled two penalty-kick goals — both opportunities stemming from Romario Pinto Goulart drawing fouls in the box — to advance to the Second Round to take on the New York Pancyprian Freedoms at St. John’s University’s Belson Stadium in Jamaica, N.Y.

New York Pancyprian Freedoms 2, New York Red Bulls U-23 1: Zach Knudson converted a 14th-minute PK for NYRB U23 to take a 1-0 lead, but Pancyprian responded with goals in the 59th and 65th minutes to rally for the victory.

Detroit City FC 0, Michigan Bucks 0 (Detroit wins 4-3 in shootout): After playing to a scoreless regulation and overtime, the PDL’s Bucks fell short in the penalty kick shootout as Detroit City advanced to face the USL’s Louisville City FC in the Second Round.

Southie FC 2, Seacoast United Phantoms 0: USASA side Southie defeated the PDL’s Phantoms on two goals from Roy Sandeman. Southie will next face defending USL champions the Rochester Rhinos in Round 2.

Landsdown Bhoys 2, Long Island Rough Riders 1 (OT): The PDL’s Rough Riders fell by virtue of an extra-time penalty as Landsdown advances to the Second Round to take on USL side the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

AFC Cleveland 1, GPS Portland Phoenix 0: The host PDL side fell to AFC Cleveland, which won its Open Cup debut and advances to take on the USL’s Saint Louis FC next Wednesday.

Harpo’s FC 2, Albuquerque Sol 0: The PDL side came up empty against Harpo’s which will now face the USL’s Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Wednesday in the Second Round in a rematch of last year’s tournament. The Switchbacks earned a 2-1 victory against Harpo’s in 2015.

Indy Eleven 1, Cincinnati Dutch Lions 0: After a lengthy weather delay, Indy Eleven held on for its victory against the PDL’s Cincinnati Dutch Lions to advance to play USL expansion side FC Cincinnati next week in the Second Round. Vincent Mitchell scored the lone goal in the 17th minute.

Sacramento Gold FC 3, Burlingame Dragons FC 1: Jamael Cox scored a goal in first-half stoppage time for the Dragons, but the PDL side conceded three second-half tallies – two to Manolo Pina, as Burlingame fell in the tournament’s First Round. La Maquina FC is up next for Sacramento in the next round.

Ventura County Fusion 2, L.A. Wolves FC 1: Ventura County was led by goals from Angel Espana and Albert Ruiz en route to the First Round victory and will host the USL’s Orange County Blues FC in the Second Round next week.

CD Aguiluchos USA 3, San Francisco City FC 0: PDL newcomer San Francisco City, which qualified as a US Club Soccer representative for the Open Cup prior to joining the PDL, bowed out of the tournament’s First Round on Wednesday. Aguiluchos will face the USL’s Sacramento Republic FC in the Second Round.

La Maquina FC 2, Portland Timbers U-23 0: The Timbers U-23s dropped their First Round match as La Maquina’s Alejandro Velazquez scored in the sixth minute and never looked back. La Maquina takes on San Francisco Gold FC in the Second Round.

Sounders FC U-23 3, Outbreak FC 1 (OT): Seattle scored two late overtime goals to earn a First Round win and advance to face fellow PDL side the Kitsap Pumas next week.
